Description
Intermetatarsal Bursitis occurs when there is inflammation of the small fluid sacs that are between the metatarsal bones. These sacs are called “Bursa” and they prevent friction and absorb shock between the metatarsal bones. Once the bursa gets inflamed, they will get swollen and pain will be felt when walking barefoot as more pressure builds up pushing against the nerves in the web space.
How did this happen?
- Irritation to the bursa
- Wearing inadequate footwear when doing sports
What should I do?
- Anti-inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen can be used for temporary relief
- Hot or cold packs can be used to reduce inflammation
- Rest the foot from high mobility activities
- Do stretches before exercise
- Wear adequately fitting shoes
- Stop wearing high heel

- A Podiatrist can advise on appropriate footwear and may even prescribe medical insoles
- A cortisone injection can also be administered to reduce inflammation
- Referral for surgery can be done for certain extreme cases
