Freiberg’s Disease

Description

Freiberg’s disease is an uncommon disorder where there is avascular necrosis (lack of blood vessels) of the metatarsal head. This results in the decomposition of your joint surfaces which can lead to pain when pressure is applied on it or stiffness or even arthritis.

How did this happen?

  • Freiberg’s Disease causes are not entirely understood
  • It is speculated that young females are at a higher risk
  • People with longer than average metatarsals are at a higher risk
  • Foot trauma can also contribute to the condition

What should I do?

  • Rest the foot from any activities that can apply intense pressure to the base of your foot
  • Seek help from a podiatrist

What kind of help can I get?

  • A podiatrist can prescribe specially designed foot orthosis to offload the region
  • A cam walker can be used for certain cases
  • Surgery might be needed if the symptoms persist after conservative methods
