Conditions

Sesamoiditis

Description

Sesamoiditis is the inflammation of two tendons located at the bottom of your big toe joint. They can cause pain when walking or running. This condition is more common amongst dancers, certain athletes, and people who frequently use heels.

How did this happen?

  • It is usually caused by the overuse of the sesamoid bones and tendons in the ball of the foot.
  • Trauma to the joint
  • High arched foot

What should I do?

  • Wear soft-soled, flat cushioned shoes
  • Apply ice packs to the area
  • Take anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen to relieve pain
  • Seek help from a podiatrist

What kind of help can I get?

  • Consult help from a podiatrist for advice on how to relieve symptoms and stress of the joint and tendons.
  • Medical Insoles can be prescribed to offload the painful region
  • Surgery will be needed if there are fractures that are unresponsive to conservative methods.

How long till it recovers?

  • Conservative methods can take a few months to see improvements
  • In the case of surgery, the recovery time will be much longer
